Saturday Snap – Rudolph’s Butthole Shooter Recipe

Shea and I went to a Christmas party, hosted and attended by a few of the couples we met through our seasonal campsite at Echo Lake this year.

All of us (well, except one camper who was pregnant this summer but made up for it at the Christmas party!) had occasionally drank shooters while listening to Riders games during the summer.

So Shea and I decided to take a Christmas-themed shooter of our own making to the party.

Rudolph’s Butthole
1/2 oz of Smirnoff Peppermint Vodka
1/2 oz of Toffee Cream Liqueur

(One party goer pointed out that if you wanted to get even more disturbing, you could add a shot of chocolate syrup to the shooter!) 😮

Ryan’s the master of puns but “Make it Ryan” instead of “Make it Rain” works pretty well too, especially after you manage to win a couple hundred bucks in the 50/50 draw at a Steak Night fundraiser!

Now I can make another donation to Ryan’s campaign *and* pay for all my drinks at the all-inclusive we’re going to in a couple days! 😉

I was heading downtown for a different social event after work yesterday when I decided to pop into Rebellion Brewing to have “a couple” samples from the many unique brews at their 4th Annual Cask Fest before carrying on my way.

The tap room was packed and I was resigned to standing along a wall, awkwardly sipping my samples when a regular who’d earlier introduced himself as I walked by, waved me over to a seat he’d found at the bar.

We talked beer for a while over a few different samples then he left to wander and his seat was quickly filled by someone else.  While chatting with this new person, we realised we shared a friend in common – someone who I used to work with at RPL is her cousin.  (And coincidentally, when I’d looked at the FB event page for Cask Fest, the cousin had indicated she was interested in attending – though it turns out they weren’t going to be there that day.)

That person left with her friend to go to a “Girl’s Night” and once again the seat was quickly filled by another person.  Somehow, this conversation quickly became about his many visits to Hawaii (possibly inspired by my recommendation of Rebellion’s own entry in Cask Fest, “Tropical Milkshake“?)

By this point, I decided I wasn’t in any condition to drive to the other event (honestly, with the current drinking while intoxicated rules, you can barely drink a single pint without risking having your vehicle impounded) so decided to try a Designated Driver service.

As opposed to a cab, these services send a team of two people – one who drives your vehicle home for you and one in a trailing vehicle who picks up the driver when they get you home.  Plus I ended up having another great conversation – this time, covering everything from current economic conditions in Regina to the opiate addiction epidemic to testicular cancer! 🙂

It’s slightly more expensive than a cab (about ten bucks) but well worth it to have my car safe and sound in the driveway this morning.

(Oh, and should also note that it was cool to see Rebellion using buns from my hometown Indian Head Bakery!)

Saturday Snap – California Subs Returns @thecapitol_jazz! (sort of) #yqr

Shea recently saw on FB that two local restaurants – the Capitol Jazz Club and the Lancaster Pub – were re-creating some favourites from the iconic 1990’s Regina sub shop, California Subs – for a limited time.

So when we had plans to go out for the evening, it was no question where our first stop would be (well, second stop – we went to The Lancaster first and it was packed so we had to run to The Capitol instead.)

Lots of fond memories of late night snacks in our college years…

Shea saw on social media that their was a cancellation for the first of the weekly “Supper in the Orchard” events at Over The Hill Orchards just outside Regina so snatched it up.

We’ve been out to Over The Hill Orchards once before for a Mother’s Day Brunch event but their restaurant area has undergone significant (and breathtaking) renovations since then.

This kick-off event for the season happened to feature Mexican cuisine for Cinco de Mayo which made it extra special as this year is our 15th Wedding Anniversary of being married in the Mayan Riviera.

Perfect night.

Throwback Thursday – #tbt – On National Caesar Day, Is This The Best Wedding Ever? (Summer 2017, Somewhere in Ontario)

Like most good Canadians, I enjoy a good caesar.

And since it’s National Caesar Day, I’m going to break from Throwback Thursday tradition and instead of posting one of my own pictures of me drinking a caesar or making a caesar or looking lovingly at a caesar on a restaurant table, I wanted to post an awesome picture a friend posted on Facebook last summer of the Caesar bar that was set-up at a wedding she attended back in Ontario.

Why didn’t Shea and I think of that for our wedding? 🙂

Friday Fun Link – Dollar Street and GapMinder’s Four Income Levels

Dollar Street, from the GapMinder Foundation, uses a well-designed interface to help counter misconceptions about different income levels in the world.

Their main point is that people don’t uniformly live in “poor” or “rich” countries like most of us tend to think but that people actually share similar lifestyles, items that they own, and things they do and desire, when they have similar incomes, whether they live in Canada, China or Cambodia.

(Uhm, Canada is not actually one of the countries in their survey – a strange oversight.)

Saturday Snap – Black Forest Beer?

I’m a big fan of black forest cake and I’m a big fan of beer so when I saw a post online about “Black Forest Beer” made by combining a dark beer like stout or porter with cherry mead, I couldn’t wait to try it.

To add to the appeal, I thought it’d be a perfect cold weather drink after spending half an hour outside shoveling snow earlier this week.

But in the end, it wasn’t horrible but didn’t really grab me the way I hoped it would.

Oh well, always worth trying something new.  (Now where’d I put that recipe for the Paloma which one guy online said was a drink that “changed his life” when he went on all-inclusive vacations?) 😉

Saturday Snap – Calling Lakes Road Trip

After running Grandpa and Grandma out to Indian Head after they returned from a month in Australia/New Zealand, Sasha and I decided to have a little adventure of our own by taking the scenic route home.

We stopped at the family farm where Sasha got to drive down the lane (watch the road!!!)…

…meet a new friend…

…and wrestle with the immortal question of what was tougher for her great-grandparents – living without microwaves or without YouTube?

Then on to the Katepwa lookout point…

…followed by Katepwa Beach to throw rocks at the still-frozen ice.

A quick stop at the Lebret grocery for treats (so quick I forgot to take a picture!) then on to Fort Qu’Appelle for groceries for supper and ideas for a cake for her upcoming birthday (and yes, you’ll see *more* treats on that conveyor – road trips are all about the food!)

Finally, home to Regina bypassing Echo Provincial Park where we had a seasonal site a couple years ago, figuring at least one of us wouldn’t be up to the hike in to our old campsite if the gates were still locked on this cold April day! 😉

Shea and Sasha went out to our seasonal site this weekend while I stayed in the city to work and Pace stuck around to play video games visit his Aunt Sandi who is visiting from Kelowna.

Shea sent me this picture and said Sasha told her it was the best camping ever because “daddy isn’t here to steal my bacon!” 🙂
