Throwback Thursday – #tbt – Christmas Sodas (December 2011)

Friday Fun Link – Kelloggs vs. GenZ

Kellogg’s workers in the States who have been on strike since October (in the US, apparently workers aren’t guaranteed their job after a strike as I believe is the case in Canada) were in the process of being laid off en masse by the company who wanted to hire 1400 permanent replacement workers.

A bunch of young people, many on Reddit’s r/antiwork sub-reddit, who realised this was pretty evil decided to intervene and crashed the site Kelloggs was using to recruit new workers.

There’s a weird distant connection Shea and I have to this – two hunters from Ohio who used to come up to hunt geese on her parents’ land every fall worked at a cereal factory in Ohio years ago (can’t remember if it was Kellogg’s or not but Ohio isn’t a state on any list of striking plants that I’ve seen.)

Anyhow, one was a true blue Democrat worker/union activist and the other was a red Republican who was in management (and lived the stereotype in your mind right down to the NRA member’s magazines in his bathroom!) 😉

But in a reflection of an earlier, simpler, pre-social media time, they were buddies who lived relatively close to each other, socialized regularly and even took hunting trips together to Saskatchewan.

They even shared the same name so they were nicknamed “Big Jim” and “Little Jim”.

Big Jim…

Little Jim (who lived steps from Lake Erie and took us out on his boat during our visit!)…

Little Jim’s backyard with Lake Erie in the background…

Shea and I did a driving trip around Lake Erie during a semester break when I was in library school in Ontario and looked them up.  We arrived at the manager’s house to what is still one of the biggest fish fries I have ever experienced in my life.

Fish Fry…

Then we stayed at the worker’s house overnight and we still have the duck he carved out of wood and painted which he gifted to us and is in our house to this day.

Anyhow, a good reminder that even if people are still on opposite sides of the union/management divide, they can still be friends.

I can’t think of an event that defines America better – the introductions, the crowds, the focus on competition and over consumption (but I’m still going to tag this as “Sports”) 😉

Throwback Thursday – #tbt – Get the Shot! (December 2009)

At a Christmas party one of Shea’s nursing colleagues hosted in 2009, one feature was pre-made alcohol shots in syringes.

Little did we know how much “get the shot” would change in meaning a decade later!  ?

Saturday Snap – Life’s Too Short For Unsalted Butter

In light of yesterday’s post where I happened to share the screenshot a portion of a life advice article that said we should eat salted butter as life is too short for unsalted, I thought I’d post a pic I happened to snap at Safeway recently.

Saying “life is too short for unsalted butter” may seem trite but it’s also very true.

Life is too short for a lot of things – enjoying food, enjoying travel, enjoying family, enjoying friends, enjoying the billion-to-one odds that we are alive in the first place.

So today, as I find myself thinking of a recently deceased colleague, I’m also thinking about how suddenly a person’s life can change – sudden illness, lingering illness, accident, etc.

I’m also thinking about how important it is to buy the salted butter – both literally and metaphorically.  And I’m glad that after snapping this pic I bought *a lot* of salted butter which I’m going to continue to enjoy every chance I get!

Saturday Snap – I See A Lot of Home Fries In My Future!

Maybe a year ago, a coworker hooked me up with a guy who sells 50 lb bags of misshapen potatoes.  And of course, when I picked up the first time, it turned out he’s a library patron I knew!

In fact, after chatting with him during my most recent pickup, I even ended up sending him some suggestions for apps that might help him manage his business – can I count that in our Reference Question stats? 😉

Anyhow, here’s the contents of the potato sack I picked up as I like to give them a quick inspection.  They’re usually high quality but I like to make sure none have any major damage or rot.

Saturday Snap – A Gift of Oranges

Sasha had permission to invite a friend over to watch a movie this afternoon and somehow that grew to five girls showing up today to watch movies, eat pizza, and hang out for a few hours. (We approved this but also chuckled at how it snowballed!)

We’ve been (mostly) careful through all of Covid but we’re also conscious of the impact that’s had on our kids (and all kids really.)

It wasn’t a birthday party for Sasha today (that’s next month) but it sort of felt like it a bit as we are conscious that Sasha has foregone what would normally be two pretty fun, memorable childhood birthdays (both her seventh and eighth were celebrated in quarantine due to Covid)

No one brought wrapped presents (again, not actually a birthday) but we were surprised that every single one brought something – chocolates, cookies, candy and one who brought oranges which felt especially fitting as we pass the two year anniversary of Covid being declared a worldwide pandemic as they’re a gift of good luck and warding off evil spirits in Asian cultures.

Saturday Snap – You Up For A Pint?

One of our neighbours occasionally texts “You up for a pint?”

Most of the time he means beer but the other night, he showed up with a pint jar of homemade moonshine his co-worker had given him.

(Apparently the secret is to dissolve Jolly Rancher candies in the mixture?!?)

Saturday Snap – Syrian Refugee Fundraiser

People displaced from Ukraine are (rightly) getting a lot of attention right now.  But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other groups that are suffering around the world.

Shea and I were happy to attend this event earlier this week (though disappointed to not win one of the amazing looking cakes in the Silent Auction!)

[Edit: What a weirdly worded post – people are suffering around the world.  Also, Shea and I didn’t get cake!] 😮
